PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
Learners found competent in this unit standard will be able to explain the basic principles of relevant current health and safety legislation and the consequences of non-compliance.

PURPOSE OF THE COURSE

Level 1: Perform basic life support and first aid procedures

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard is for persons required to assess the emergency situation and providing basic Life Support and basic First Aid in order to stabilise patients prior to transfer to the emergency services.
People credited with this unit standard are able to:
Demonstrate an understanding of emergency scene management
Demonstrate an understanding of elementary anatomy and physiology
Assess an emergency situation
Apply First Aid procedures to the life-threatening situation
Treat common injuries
UNIT STANDARD RANGE:
The recognition and management of a range of emergencies according to the prescribed protocols.
Rendering basic First Aid to the community even if the required resources have to be improvised
Level 2: Provide risk-based primary emergency care/first aid in the workplace

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This Unit Standard will be useful for employees to enable them to provide primary emergency care (first aid) in response to an occupational risk induced or any health emergency in their specific workplaces.
Qualifying learners are able to:
Demonstrate the principles of primary emergency care.
Assess and control a single injury emergency scene in the workplace.
Demonstrate primary emergency life support for adults, children and infants.
Explain and manage shock.
Carry out secondary assessment of the sick or injured person and provide appropriate primary emergency care at the scene.
Keep records of the incident/accident.
UNIT STANDARD RANGE:
This unit standard covers the recognition and management of the following range of emergencies for adults, children and infants according to current and accepted emergency care protocols and principles:
Emergency scene management.
Rescue breathing, CPR and choking for adults, children and infants.
Shock.
Bleeding and wounds.
Neck and spine immobilization and transportation.
Fractures and dislocations.
Burns.
Thermal stress.
Poisoning.
Medical emergencies.
Level 3: Provide first aid as an advanced first responder

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard is to enable the first responder to react to emergencies at an advanced first aid level, until the arrival of more professional emergency personnel.
Qualifying learners will be capable of:
Explaining the principles of advanced first aid in emergencies.
Demonstrating an advanced level of preparedness to deal with sudden illness or emergency.
Assessing and managing an emergency scene/disaster.
Describing the anatomy and explaining the physiology of the human body systems in terms of injury or sudden illness.
Applying primary first aid for all age groups according to accepted current first aid protocols.
Explaining and managing shock.
NB: The certificate of competence associated with this Unit Standard will be valid for only three years to ensure the holder's continued competency through regular re-assessment.

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
The skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard are required by people in the field of manufacturing and engineering.
The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for various manufacturing and engineering qualifications.
Qualifying learners can select and use the appropriate fire fighting equipment to extinguish or control fires in the workplace.

Learners who are assessed as competent against this unit standard will be able to monitor the performance of team members including disciplinary action and provide on-job training and coaching

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard is for persons in the Electrical Engineering; Generation; Distribution; Transmission, Construction and Renewable Energy Sectors.
A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
Select, safely use and care for range of fixed and portable power tools
This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the electrical engineering and construction environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of Physical Planning and Construction. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the electrical engineering and construction environment.
UNIT STANDARD RANGE:
Power source includes pneumatic, hydraulic and electrical.
The range of power tools include but is not limited to drilling machines, grinders, sanders, brushes, riveters, buffs, wrenches (including impact type), saws and tacks.
Caring for power tools includes but is not limited to clamping, changing blades, replacing, adjustment or setting up, cleaning, lubricating and tightening.
Safety precautions include the use of personal protective equipment, electrical and fire protection.
Statutory requirements include but are not limited to SABS, OSH Act and manufacturers specifications.
